UMD ALERT: All Clear

An all clear has been issued for the incident that occurred in the 7200 block of Baltimore Ave.  It appears that the suspect and the two males with him have left the area.

 

Officers from Prince George's County and the University of Maryland are still on the scene.  High visibility patrols of the area will continue, but please notify the police if anything suspicious is observed. 

 

The Prince George's County Police Department is conducting the investigation for this incident.

 A person armed with a knife has been reported in the  7200 block of Baltimore Ave near Hartwick Rd. The suspect maybe wearing a yellow puffy coat and was last seen heading toward the Metro on Hardwick Road. Avoid the area and follow police directions. Additional information will be provided when it becomes available

The purpose of this UMD Advisory is to inform you of a hate bias incident that was reclassified to a hate crime by means of electronic communication harassment. A suspect has been identified and charged accordingly. Please see below for details.


UMPD CASE #: 2019-73744

DETAILS:
 

On December 12, 2019, at approximately 11:30 a.m., UMPD was notified of a hate bias incident that occurred on December 10, 2019, at approximately 8:18 p.m. A female UMD student reported to police that while at McKeldin Library, she received anti-Semitic messages on her cell phone from a person she did not know.

A detective was assigned to investigate this incident. Through investigative means, our detective was able to identify the suspect (UMD student), who sent multiple messages to the victim because of her religious beliefs.

On February 24, 2020, our detective applied for and received an arrest warrant for the suspect. The male, Muqarrab Ahmed Abdullah, 24 year old from La Plata, Maryland, is charged with the following:

CR 3-805 ((b)(1)) Electronic Communication Harassment

CR 3-804 ((a)(2)) Telephone Misuse: Repeat Calls

CR 10-304 (1) Race/Religion Crime: Person/Group

-  Electronic Communication Harassment against the victim because of the victim’s religious beliefs.

On Thursday, February 27, 2020, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office served the arrest warrant.

As you know, we are a bustling campus with many modes of transportation. Over the years and in partnership with the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) and our own Department of Transportation Services (DOTS), there have been many new measures implemented that have improved the safety of all those in our campus community.

And as a reminder, when you are traveling on and around campus you should Walk Smart, Bike Smart, Drive Smart and Scoot Smart.

Tips for Drivers:

  • Stay alert and give driving your full attention
  • Show courtesy to other drivers, pedestrians and cyclists

Many buildings on campus experienced a power outage early this morning.  Facilities Management crews have been working on location to restore service.  Some buildings on South Campus are still without electricity, however we expect power to be restored soon.  back-up generators for necessary research labs are functioning properly.  Resident Life service desks are available to assist residents.  Please call UMPD if you need immediate assistance at 911 (Emergency) or 301-405-3555 (Non-Emergency).  If you have any questions, please contact the Facilities Management Customer Support Center at fmcrc@umd.edu or 301-405-2222.

OCCURRED:             February 15, 2020 / Approximately 12:01 a.m.

 LOCATION:              8100 Block of Rhode Island Avenue, College Park, Maryland

BRIEF DETAILS:

On February 15, 2020, at approximately 12:01 a.m., the University of Maryland Police Department was notified that the Prince George's County Police Department was responding to the 8100 block of Rhode Island Avenue near Lakeland Road for a burglary.
