UMD ALERT - Tornado Warning

The Tornado Warning has been issued for the UMD campus. The sirens have been activated. Seek shelter immediately, avoid windows. We will continue to provide additional information when it becomes available. Seek shelter immediately.

 

IF WALKING OUTSIDE:


* Go to the nearest building and proceed to the basement of the building. If there is no basement, go to the lowest level of the building. 


IF INSIDE A RESIDENCE HALL OR HOUSE:


*Go to the basement, safe room, or any lowest level interior room away from windows.


* Protect yourself from flying debris with a mattress and thick blanket, if available.


IF INSIDE A BUILDING:


*If you have a tornado drill in place for your building, proceed to your tornado shelter location quickly and calmly.


*If not, go to the  basement, safe room, or any lowest level interior room in the building. Stay away from windows and protect yourself from flying debris with a   mattress and thick blanket, if available.


* Do not go to large rooms such as a cafeteria, a gym, or auditoriums.



IF IN A CONSTRUCTION TRAILER:


* Abandon it immediately. Even weak tornadoes can cause major damage to trailers.


* Go to the nearest building and proceed to the basement of the building. If there is no basement, go to the lowest level. Stay away from windows.


DRIVING A VEHICLE:

* Do not drive into or near a tornado


* Do not attempt to outrun a tornado, they can change direction and speed quickly.


* Go into a building and go to the basement or the lowest level.


* Do not seek shelter under an overpass or underpass


* If no building is available, either get down in your car and cover your head, or abandon your car and seek shelter in a low-lying area such as a ditch or ravine.

**Community Notice**

The purpose of this e-mail is to make you aware of an incident that occurred off-campus near the University of Maryland, College Park campus. The following is a synopsis of an incident reported to the Prince George's County Police Department.

INCIDENT:                Off-Campus Death Investigation

LOCATION:              8700 Block of Rhode Island Avenue, College Park, Maryland

PGPD CASE #:           PP 19-052200000357

BRIEF DETAILS:

On May 22, 2019, at approximately 6 a.m., the Prince George's County Police Department responded to the 8700 block of Rhode Island for an unresponsive adult male on the ground. Officers discovered the man was suffering from head trauma. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The Prince George's County Police Department Detectives are working to determine the circumstances that led up to the man's death. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-866-411-TIPS.

Due to today's incident involving a contained fire in a university lab, rooms 2113 - 2235 of the Chemical and Nuclear Engineering Building will remain closed until the clean up is done. The rest of the building is now open. Roadways are open to traffic.
